Adapted from a novel by Gilles Paris that was made into a live-action French drama in 2004, “My Life As A Zucchini” is a relatively uneventful film once you get past the spooky opening. The only fly in the ointment is Camille’s terrifying aunt (voiced in the English language version by Amy Sedaris) who barges into the orphanage like the proverbial bull in a china shop to demand custody. That’s not to say the writing lacks—the screenplay adaptation is by Céline Sciamma, the director of the fabulous 2015 movie “Girlhood” and the co-writer of André Techiné’s distinctive 2016 film “Being 17.” The character work here is both intimate and nicely compressed. In the middle of the end credits there’s another treat: an animated rendition of the audition of Gaspard Schlatter, the young boy who voices Zucchini in French. .

My Life as a Courgette

Deep Focus: My Life as a Zucchini

On the other side he draws a chicken—because his mother told him that his father loves “the chicks.” His mother dubbed him Zucchini; he goes by it to respect her memory.Barras and Sciamma’s storytelling style is a marvelous blend of direction and indirection. The door slams down on his mother’s head. The way the film spurts ahead, then stops to breathe, reflects the stop-and-go progress of Zucchini and his new friends. That’s true, but his original choices for portraying his puppets’ human features account for much of the movie’s wit and poignancy. These two figurines share more chemistry than most human co-stars, and that goes for the orphanage kids and personnel, too. What’s refreshing about My Life as a Zucchini is that it doesn’t strain to be “different;” even the obligatory getting-to-know-you scenes emerge in unusual ways. But Barras isn’t moralistic about the hazing that Simon puts Zucchini through. When Zucchini hesitates to disclose why he ends up in the orphanage, Simon tells him why everyone else is in there; he just needs to know where everyone is coming from.He doesn’t use the information to bully them, but to understand. It’s part of her legacy from her father.Near the end, two children get the chance to be adopted. It’s Simon who tells them they have to go. .
